Aesthetics of Embodiment – Embodiment Theories of Aesthetics

Organization: Dr. Alex Arteaga, Dr. Marion Lauschke, Einav Katan

The object of this research focus is aesthetic experience in the context of theories of embodiment. Aesthetic experience is characterized by its processual orientation and two-directional focus on the perceived object as well as the bodily-sensual process of perception itself. It is not directed towards the identification of objects, circumstances, or the character of expression, as commonly claimed. Aesthetic perception can be described as the affection of the bodily schema (Head, Bethoz, Gallagher) by an image schema (Johnson), and is an indispensable resource for understanding “what it means to be embodied” (Krois).
