The Haptic Picture

The research focus aims to shed light on different facets of haptic perception and the bodily characteristics of pictures by examining exemplary artifacts from the Renaissance to the present day. The status of the picture and the recipient is scrutinized with regard to haptic and tactile stimuli and sensory perception. The question at stake is whether and in how far the liveliness of pictures can, or must, be understood as a genuine and inherent impetus aiming at visual and haptic perception. → more information

Embodied Cognition

The research focus “Embodied Cognition” examines the role played by the body in its interaction with the environment during thought-processes and perception. In the last two decades, a new school of cognitive science was established under the label of “Embodied Cognition,” in which classical theories of artificial intelligence research, psychology, and neuroscience have been challenged. At its center stands the assumption that cognition (thought, perception, emotion, and experience) cannot be explained by focusing on the
brain, but must instead include references to the body and the interaction with its surrounding that both are constitutive for cognition. The cluster aims to question the terms commonly used in the debate – “embodiment,” “embedded cognition,” “enactivism,” and “extended mind” – as well as the concepts underlying them, and to discuss and sharpen these terms in close exchange with leading figures of the debate about “Embodied Cognition.”→ more information

Aesthetics of Embodiment – Embodiment Theories of Aesthetics

The object of this research focus is aesthetic experience in the context of theories of embodiment. Aesthetic experience is characterized by its processual orientation and two-directional focus on the perceived object as well as the bodily-sensual process of perception itself. It is not directed towards the identification of objects, circumstances, or the character of expression, as commonly claimed. Aesthetic perception can be described as the affection of the bodily schema (Head, Bethoz, Gallagher) by an image schema (Johnson),
and is an indispensable resource for understanding “what it means to be embodied” (Krois).

The Conceptual Image: Ellipsis

The emphasis of this research group lies on two interrelated topics: For one, re-issuing the works of the art historian and philosopher Edgar Wind, whose philosophy of pictures and embodiment is seminal for current debates; and furthermore, the examination of early modern conflicts initiated through pictures, with a special focus on the dynamics of decision-making initiated by pathos formulas. Embodiment and iconicity in the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce

The cluster pursues two paramount aims: Firstly, fundamental research will be carried out by means of a systematic survey of Peirce’s philosophical legacy, which shall subsequently be made publicly accessible; Secondly, in-depth inquiries into the image-universe of Peirce will be undertaken in the context of a research field still to be established under the title of “Visual Thinking,” which

The Historical Anthropology of Pictures

The research focus on The Historical Anthropology of Pictures deals with the relationship between pictures and embodiment from a historical perspective. The aim is to define what changes from a temporal point of view when the manner of depiction changes. If “homo depictor” renders objects in his surrounding differently over time, this cannot be exhaustively explained by style, i.e. the way in which the same things are represented differently in the course of a historic development, but due to the altered appropriation of objects in, or through, the picture, must consider the objects themselves, as well. In a picture act, reality is constructed by means of depiction. The history of images is hence able to shed light on the history of human attempts to construct what we call reality. → more information
